In my time I have known more than a few great graphic artists. Interestingly, most have been women. Now I do not count myself as a great graphic artist - theirs is a talent that reaches beyond the ordinary creative ascetic into a mystical realm where the juggling of imagery and text into a captivating dance of harmony and balance while staying on message is standard issue. Their philosophies on font alone are enough to make the mind stutter.
My approach is to take a good helping of cinematic drama, add to that a dollop of some slightly twisted humor and a double smidgen of ironically iconic reference, stir it all up and throw it in the oven for an hour and see what comes of it. Keeping fingers crossed that the words will all be spelt correctly when it is done.
On a related note, I think it would be really cool to design ones' own font.
