reinterpreting a couple of famous filmsThis is a beautiful piece that takes a little explanation. This is from the third film in that most famous of mafia family film series – it was going to broadcast on one of the networks which wanted to run it in a two night two hours each slot but, even with additional footage added to the body of the film and all other formatting, it was still running about thirteen minutes short. So somebody suggested we make a recap/montage of the first and second film and run it before the movie starts, sounds easy enough. One thing though – you can’t use Marlon Brando or Robert Duval unless you pay them large sums of money – not so easy. Nobody wanted to touch it – so it landed on my desk. Actually that rule was a god send in that it caused one to focus on the true emotional arc that moved through 1 and 2 and reached at 3 – Michaels coming of age in the family business and his relationships with his wife and brother. I put this together and showed it to Coppola who signed off on it immediately with one proviso – that it go after the main title as part of the body of the film – high praise indeed.
Check it out – it’s worth it. - edit/sound design |
